Hobbyists, enthusiasts and part-time directors. Each of our Lucky Three finalists is a mix of filmmaker and fan. Get the scoop on who they are and what makes them tick. You'll be able to say you knew all about them before they hit the big time.

It took more than influences to become a Frame of Reference finalist. Each of our contestants ran the gauntlet to produce their first contest films:
  • Getting Referential
Our contestants chose from a palette of film styles, motifs and indie songs to develop a solid plot.

  • Making it In
Time was of the essence as contestants filmed, edited and submitted films by the April 4 deadline.

  • Surviving the Votes
Over three rounds, the films were screened, reviewed and rated by the public and a select set of judges.

Our finalists' second challenge films debuted at the Telluride Film Festival, which took place over the 2008 Labor Day weekend. But the labors of the Lucky Three ended more than a week before: Take a look at the rigorous Lucky Three calendar.
